Catalina Island vs. Saona Island: Which Punta Cana Excursion Is Better?

Choosing between Catalina Island and Saona Island is not really about which island is more beautiful. Both offer turquoise Caribbean water, white-sand beaches, palm trees, and an unforgettable day away from Punta Cana.

The real difference is the type of experience you want.

Catalina Island: Better for Snorkeling & Smaller Groups

Catalina Island, located just off the coast of La Romana, is smaller and generally feels quieter and less crowded than Saona.

For travelers who enjoy snorkeling, Catalina is currently my preferred choice. Its clear water and established snorkeling areas make it easier to spend more time exploring underwater instead of simply visiting the beach.

Saona Island is the better-known of the two and one of the most popular excursions in the Dominican Republic.

Located inside Cotubanamá National Park, Saona is famous for its long palm-lined beaches, shallow turquoise water, mangroves, natural pools, and beautiful Caribbean scenery.

Saona is ideal for travelers who want the classic Dominican Republic island experience.

One important reminder: you may see starfish in the shallow natural pools. Please admire them underwater and never remove them from the sea.

Saona Classic – $75 Per Person

Our Saona Classic is the most economical way to experience the island.

Hotel pickup is usually early in the morning from the Punta Cana/Bávaro area. Transportation is shared and may include additional hotel pickups or stops before arriving in Bayahibe.

The excursion normally combines a catamaran and speedboat, plus time on Saona Island and a Dominican-style buffet lunch.

It is a great option if your priority is experiencing Saona at an affordable price.

Saona Semi-Private – Starting at $135 Per Person

The Semi-Private Saona experience is designed for travelers who want a smoother and more comfortable day.

The biggest advantage is transportation. Instead of spending extra time making multiple hotel stops, you travel more directly between your hotel and Bayahibe.

You still enjoy the island, boat experience, natural pool, drinks, and Dominican buffet, but with a more convenient overall journey.

Prices start around $135 per person for two guests and generally become more attractive as the group grows.

Saona Full Private / Excellence

For travelers looking for something completely different, our Saona Full Private or Excellence Experience starts around $2,300 for up to 8 guests.

This is designed as a luxury day rather than a traditional group excursion.

Choose Catalina if snorkeling, fewer crowds, and a more intimate experience are your priorities.

Choose Saona if you want the famous postcard-style island experience, natural pools, long beaches, and a larger variety of excursion options.

Neither one is the wrong choice.

Catalina feels more personal and snorkeling-focused.

Saona feels larger, livelier, and more iconic.

Whichever you choose, both offer one of the best ways to experience the Caribbean side of the Dominican Republic.
